Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Eastleigh, Hampshire

Campaigners launched protests against the creation of a Sainsbury's megastore, home delivery depot, and housing development in Eastleigh. The plans would have seen part of a recreation ground being built on with the loss of 5000 sq ft of parkland, including 51 trees.

Campaigners were particularly concerned about the effect of the proposed development on air quality in the area, which is already an 'air quality management area'. Members of the Save Stoneham Park and Rescue the Rec groups staged a protest in the town on the 21st September.
