The Co-op wants to build a store on the site of a current petrol station in Main Road, Duston.
More than 800 people signed a petition against the development.
Planning Inspector, Mr McGurk said the development would not harm the area. He said: “During my site visit I noted the current garage contributes little to the attractive qualities of the area. “In particular, I noted that the garage building, canopy, car sales area and other features were mostly unattractive and detracted from the overall appearance of the area. “By way of contrast the proposed development would serve to “tidy up” the site. It would present a reasonably pleasant and modern, if rather plainly designed, new building.”
Northampton Borough Council’s planning committee voted by a majority of six to three to turn down the plans because of the ‘overbearing impact’ it would have on the community and the visual impact of the new store.
