Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Douglas, Isle of Man

Tesco wanted to double the size of its existing store in Douglas by raising the roof height to provide the extra space for a 2,000 sq m mezzanine floor. However, independent businesses raised concerns, with some fearing town centre businesses would lose so much trade they would be forced to shut.

Ramsey commissioners passed a resolution for the Tesco planning application to be 'called in' by CoMin.
