Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Churchdown, Gloucestershire

In February 2010 plans for a new Tesco store in Churchdown were discussed at a public meeting attended by 200 people.

Campaign group Churchdown Against Tesco Site (Cats) held the meeting to talk about the proposed 2,230 sqm supermarket and 107 car parking spaces at the former Hurrans Garden Centre in Cheltenham Road East.

In October officers at Tewkesbury Borough Council recommended councillors approve the proposals even though they received 243 objections from residents, an action group, parish councillors, shopkeepers and Tewkesbury MP Laurence Robertson.
