Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Bridge of Allan, Stirling

In 2010 residents and shop keepers launched a campaign" Save Our Street" to stop a supermarket opening on the ground floor of the Walmer Hotel. A petition of 1,390 signatures was gathered,

Planning permission had already been granted for change of use of the ground floor but the approval is conditional on road alterations, including a lorry parking bay. The Save our Street campaign encouraged people to oppose the necessary traffic order as they say the supermarket cannot go ahead without it. It was concerned that the development would exacerbate already difficult parking, allow the volume of traffic “thundering” through the village to increase, make crossing the road dangerous for pedestrians, and put children walking or cycling to school at greater risk.
