Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Brickhill, Bedfordshire

A local campaign "Brickhill Residents Against Tesco Store" BRATS was launched against plans for a Tesco Express taking over a pub -Bird in Hand, Brickhill Drive - in Bedford. Campaigners had support from Borough/Parish councillors and MP. Petitions were signed, letters of protest sent to the Borough councillors, and a public meeting was held in August 2011.

On 6th October Brickhill Parish residents took part in a Historic vote whereby an overwhelming 94% majority rejected Tesco plans. The campaign group said "The Poll gives the people of Brickhill a Democratic Voice, and the result sends a clear message to the Borough Council and Tesco that they are not welcome in Brickhill. We urge the Borough Council to use this mandate to pursue the enforcement of the Restrictive Covenant which effectively states the premises can only be used as a pub".

However, Tesco were able to buy and license the new store in Brickhill at the end of February 2012.  For further information please see the campaign website.
