Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Belvedere, Kent

B&Q and Asda mounted a joint proposal to halve in size the B&Q store in Station Road to make way for a separate Asda supermarket.

Local residents and traders are concerned by the plans and the impact the development will have on existing shops and a campaign group "BAAD - Belvedere Against Asda Development" was set up. Over 850 signatures have been gathered opposing the plans.

In March 2012 the plans were reconsidered and approved by Bexley Council’s planning committee. Councillors sought to reject the applications in February because of its impact on local trade and traffic but deferred the decision so officers - who recommended approval - could look again.

BAAD helped to generate a 409-strong petition and 375 letters of objection in six months.
