Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Barbourne Rd, Worcester

In April 2008 Tesco submitted two new applications to Worcester City Council that both contained plans for a new Tesco Express on the site of a former petrol station on Barbourne Road. Local shopkeepers opposed the plans.

In January 2014  a planning application was submitted to Worcester City Council for Sainsbury's to transform an old furniture store in Barbourne Road into a local branch supermarket. But staff at the family-run Costcutter in the same road are already looking for new work as they felt the build would hit the store's custom too hard to keep them employed and the business going.

Tesco gains planning approval

Tesco wants to create a three-storey building with a Tesco Express on the ground floor and 12 apartments on the upper levels above it, ten of which will be two-bed and five one-bed. It was backed by Worcester City Council's planning committee despite Tesco being turned down for an express store on the same site six years ago.
