Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Ashford, Kent

A planning application to turn the 150-year-old Black Dog pub in Ashford into a Tesco was submitted in May 2013. The pub is only 300 yards form a Tesco superstore.

Ashford Common Councillor Frank Ayers said: “The residents seem to be against the proposals – particularly the traders at the parade. The residents are planning to get a petition out. Whether that carries any weight remains to be seen. I would hope it would. A petition signed by 533 names together with seven letters of objection had been submitted opposing the plans. A campaign group " Stop The Black Dog being turned into Tesco Express" was set up.
