Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Alton, Hampshire

March 2009- Tesco unveiled their plans at a public exhibition for a 3,500 sqm store on the edge of Alton, approx 1.5miles from the centre. The planning officer recommended refusal.

July 2009 - Councillors turned down the application.

October 2009 -Tesco then submitted a second application which was turned down

2010 - Tesco submitted a third application, which was again turned down.

July 2010 - It appealed against the second decision to refuse planning and a public inquiry was held. The Planning Inspector dismissed Tesco's appeal. Read the full appeal decision here.

December 2010 -Tesco then submitted a further application but East Hampshire District Council, Planning North refused the application.

January 2011 - Tesco launched an appeal.

June 2011- the Planning Inspectorate upheld Tesco's appeal granting it permission for a store at Mill Lane. It seems the planning inspector was, on this second occasion, satisfied with the revised proposals, saying: “There is a need for shoppers to have more choice . . . the benefits of a Tesco proposal to the residents of Alton would be significant”.
