Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Alsager, Staffordshire

Sainsbury's plans for a new out-of-town store were due to go before Cheshire East Council's strategic planning committee but were pulled by the company after they were recommended for refusal by planning officers. In a list of key reasons why the store should be refused, planners said the design of the store was 'poor' and not enough information had been provided about the impact on traffic. Planners also raised concerns about the impact the store would have on smaller shops and businesses.
