Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Abingdon, Oxfordshire

In 2004 Tesco submitted a planning application to increase the size of the store by one third and create an additional 180 car-parking spaces. Local retailers have campaigned against the proposal fearing it would turn Abingdon town centre into a ghost town.

In 2011 Tesco opened a third store in The Ox, in Oxford Road despite a petition of 100 signatures objecting to the plans. Tesco also opened a Tesco Express store in the former Fitzharris Arms pub, in Thornhill Walk,in June.

In July 2012 the Witney Gazette reported that Tesco has submitted a planning application for a new 470 sq metre sales floor area extension to its existing store.

Plans rejected

At a Planning Committee of the Vale of White Horse, Councillors unanimously turned down the proposal as it is not in line with the local plan and there are still concerns about any additional traffic.
