Campaigning to curb supermarket power

Abbeydale, Gloucester

Residents desperate to save a once thriving Abbeydale pub will now be able to have their say when controversial demolition plans are put before a planning inspector.

Morrisons want to redevelop The Ridge and Furrow pub in Abbeydale. The pub closed in December 2013. In May 2015  Morrisons were refused planning permission in May to flatten the site and build a filling station.

Morrisons, which has a store opposite the site in the Glevum Shopping Centre, launched an appeal against Gloucester City Council's decision and requested the planning inspector consider only accepting views on the plans in writing when considering the appeal.  Residents have set up a campaign group "the Save The Ridge Campaign".  A petition to save the Ridge and Furrow gained 2,000 signatures from concerned residents.

Planning Inspector upholds Council's decision

The council's decision to reject proposals to turn the former Ridge and Furrow pub into a petrol station has been upheld by a planning inspector. After being refused planning permission by Gloucester City Council, Morrisons' case was heard by a Government planning inspector. While planning inspector Jonathon Parsons said the station would benefit the suburb economically, he believed the design of the petrol station and the storage tanks would ruin the area's character.
